Septr. 1st, 1773 by Archd. Bell, bookseller no. 8 near the Saracens Head Aldgate."--Front. Frontispiece (trimmed and mounted) is an engraved port. of the author. In contemporary wrappers. Porter, no. 1284. Signatures: [A]⁴ B-Q⁴. Printer's advertisement: page [4] at end. "Published according to Act of Parliament, Septr. 1st, 1773 by Archd. Bell, Bookseller No. 8 near the Saracens Head Aldgate"--Page facing title page, beneath frontispiece portrait. Author's dedication "[t]o the Right Honourable the Countess of Huntingdon" dated Boston, June 12, 1773. Includes author's preface, a letter "sent by the author's master to the publisher" (signed John Wheatley, Boston, Nov. 14, 1772), and a notice "To the publick" by Thomas Hutchinson, governor of Boston, and various officials attesting to Phillis Wheatley's authorship of the poems. Frontispiece portrait engraved after a drawing by Scipio Moorhead, an African American artist enslaved by the Reverend John Moorhead of Boston. |
